5 Types of Love to Celebrate this Valentine's Day!

February 3 2020 By Chealsea Hunt

Most people think that Valentine's Day is just for couples, but it's really a time to observe all forms of love. So, whether you're in a relationship or you're flying solo this year, you can still spend February 14th embracing the spirit of the holiday! Here are five types of love that deserve to be celebrated!

1. Romantic

This is obviously the type of love most commonly associated with Valentine's Day, and it is definitely something worth celebrating.

Admittedly, romantic relationships can come and go. You may fall in and out of love a dozen times in your lifetime. You may have your heart broken a time or two. Or just maybe you'll find the perfect person on the first try.

No matter how many times it happens, it will be different each time you fall for someone. Sometimes it's right for a while, sometimes it's right for a lifetime. But each romantic love matters, so it is important you live in the present and enjoy today.

Whether you're celebrating first love or forever love, make sure you take every chance to show your partner how much they mean to you in this moment.

2. Family

The word "family" can mean different things to different people.

You may have a spouse and children. Perhaps have grandchildren who mean the world to you. Your parents and siblings may be a major part of your life. Or maybe you love your "found family" consisting of friends and neighbors.

Whatever the case may be, the love of a family deserves to be celebrated.

Since I was a kid, my mom has given me a gift every Valentine's Day to "make sure I always know I'm loved." It's a sweet tradition that means the world to me, and I would highly recommend starting a similar tradition in your own family. Make your kids feel special, or remind your parents just how much they mean to you.

3. Friendship

The popular sitcom Parks and Recreation popularized the notion of "Galentine's Day", which falls on February 13th and is a special day to celebrate the joys of female friendship.

You may or may not be familiar with this series or the pseudo-holiday it inspired, but either way, I'm sure you can get behind the idea of celebrating platonic love that exists between good friends.

Good friends can be hard to come by, so be sure you never take them for granted. Let them know you care this Valentine's Day, or dedicate a special day just to them in true Parks and Rec style!

4. Self

Self-love is hard sometimes.

In the past, the term has been associated with ideas of selfishness or narcissism. This causes a lot of people to hesitate before taking the time to treat themselves kindly.

But in all honesty, that is all self-love is. Just treating yourself kindly.

Self-love is defined as showing regard for one's own well-being and happiness. There's nothing selfish about that. Loving yourself in no way diminishes your love for others.

So, this Valentine's Day, take a minute to yourself. Think positively about yourself, and recognize that you deserve to be cared for. Treat yourself to something that makes you happy. Maybe put on your favorite sandals, kick back, and enjoy your morning coffee?

If you want, you can actually devote the entire day to things that bring a smile to your face. You deserve a little "me time," and you absolutely deserve to be loved.

5. Hospitality

If you are unable to spend the day with loved ones, and an entire day of self-love is a little too indulgent for your tastes, then consider sharing love with the world by giving back.

Hospitality can be defined as loving strangers, and it's a type of love that we should all celebrate a little more often.

This Valentine's Day, spend some time at your local foodbank or volunteer at an animal shelter. You'll get back the love you give ten times over, which will certainly make this a holiday to remember.
